A GloGerm handwashing demonstration is a training exercise that makes the germs left behind by poor handwashing visible. Participants coat their hands in a fluorescent simulation lotion, wash normally, then view their hands under UV light to see what they missed. What do you need to run the demonstration?
You need four things: GloGerm gel or oil, a long-wave UV lamp, a handwashing sink with soap and warm water, and a space you can darken.
- GloGerm gel or oil — gel is water-based and won't stain; oil glows brighter but can stain clothing. See GloGerm Gel vs Powder vs Oil.

- A sink, soap, warm water, and paper towel.
- A darkened area — the demo works best with the lights down.
Note: Always check for allergies before applying — the gel formulation contains soy oil.
How do you run the demonstration, step by step?
Run it in five steps: apply, check, wash, re-check, debrief.
- Apply the gel or oil. Shake the bottle well. Place a small amount (about the size of a quarter) in one palm and have the participant rub it over both hands like lotion — covering the backs, between fingers, around cuticles, and under the nails. Wipe off any excess with a paper towel.
- Check hands under UV before washing. In the darkened area, hold hands under the UV lamp. The simulated germs glow, showing full coverage — this is the "before."
- Wash the FDA-recommended way. Wet hands, apply soap, scrub all surfaces for at least 20 seconds, rinse under warm running water, and dry.
- Re-check hands under UV. Return to the lamp. Any areas still glowing are the spots the participant missed — commonly thumbs, fingertips, nail beds, and between the fingers.
- Debrief. Point out the missed zones and connect them to real contamination risk. Repeat the wash if time allows to show improvement.
Chapped or cracked skin holds the residue longer, which demonstrates that damaged skin also harbours more real bacteria.
What does proper handwashing look like in a food setting?
The FDA Food Code and CDC both specify the same core method: wet, soap, scrub every surface of the hands for at least 20 seconds, rinse, and dry. GloGerm makes it obvious when any of those surfaces get skipped. In the hospital cleaning-staff study, residual contamination was most frequent in the interdigital spaces (between fingers), fingertips, and backs of the fingers — the same zones a food handler misses.

Should you use gel or oil for the handwashing demo?
Use gel for most food-service handwashing demos — it's water-based, applies like lotion, and won't stain aprons or clothing. Choose oil only when you want a brighter glow and can control for staining.
