GloGerm requires long-wave ultraviolet light — UV-A, in the 315–400nm range, the same band as a standard "blacklight." A 365nm UV lamp is the best choice: it produces the brightest, cleanest glow with almost no visible purple haze, so the simulated germs stand out sharply. A 395nm light also works and costs less, but throws more purple glare that washes out the effect. Do not use short-wave UV-B or UV-C lights — they are unsafe for skin and eyes and are not what GloGerm is designed for. A matched handheld UV lamp is all you need to run any GloGerm demonstration.

What UV light do you need for GloGerm?

You need a long-wave UV-A light (315–400nm) — a blacklight. GloGerm's fluorescent dye is activated specifically by long-wave UV-A, which is why any GloGerm demo requires one. The GloGerm Company itself specifies long-wave UV-A for its products.

365nm or 395nm — which wavelength is better for GloGerm?

365nm is better. It emits almost pure UV-A with minimal visible light, so fluorescence is brightest and clearest; 395nm is cheaper but leaks a lot of visible violet light that dulls the effect.

Is GloGerm UV light safe to use on hands and skin?

Yes — the long-wave UV-A light GloGerm uses is safe for skin and eyes in normal demonstration use, requiring no special protective equipment. The safety line is the wavelength: long-wave UV-A is safe; short-wave UV-B and UV-C are not.

Don't stare directly into the lamp tube at close range for extended periods, and don't remove the lamp's shield or lens. People who are photosensitive, take photosensitizing medication, or have certain eye conditions should avoid exposure.

Can you use a cheap blacklight, a phone, or a party UV light?

A dedicated 365nm UV lamp is best; an inexpensive 395nm blacklight will work in a pinch but with more glare and weaker contrast. A phone "UV" light is not real ultraviolet and will not activate GloGerm.

Many consumer "UV" flashlights are actually 395–405nm chosen because the visible purple looks powerful to buyers — but that visible light is exactly what reduces fluorescence contrast.
